Dead Kittens

I was walking home from the postoffice this afternoon and enjoying the sunshine and a slightly cooler nip in the air, and then I saw this dead kittne on the pavement. There was a time when I would have sat down on the kerb and cried at the sight of this little thing, but fortunately I've developed a tougher skin over the years. But it's still sad to see the half-starved horses being beaten on the streets, and to find dead little cats on the pavement. It's just one other element of life here that makes the days a bit tougher.
Of course, there is also a great deal of animal pain and suffering in British and American societies, but it is kept hidden from public view in large factory farms and abattoirs. This is why I'm a vegetarian... But public and open animal cruelty is generally regarded as unacceptable and something that would generate disapproval. Are British and US societies hypocritical with regard to their treatment of animals? Of course. But I still appreciate the fact that beating a dog or an emaciated horse is not regarded as acceptable behaviour.

"This is why I'm a vegetarian..."

Go vegan, avoiding the consumption of all animal products.

Now I just hope this Western benevolence would extend to humans in the Middle East :)

Ok Sage... I get the point ;-) You'll have to excuse my animal mushiness....

And, MiddleXeast, I was a vegan for about a year and think it is a wonderful way to live. But I found it so hard to travel, eat in friends' houses or out in restaurants etc. Plus I love cheese. And chocolate. So I'm afraid my tastebuds and desire to travel/ socialise more easily got the better of my morals... But you've put the vegan way of life back in my head... (though I'm living in yogurt here and I'd have no idea what else to have for breakfast!)

All I'm saying is prisoners at Gitmo don't get such a thorough trial.

I was a vegetarian last year at HLS as well, because there is no catering readily available to those who eat halal meat.

Yes... what the prisoners go through in Gitmo is terrible. That's why I worked on cases against the US adminstration last year attempting to get better protection for these detainees.

And I was reading an Amnesty International report today describing the awful conditions in Gitmo...
much worse than anything the kitten went through...

And thanks for bird-killing article. When I was writing the kitten entry, I was aware that animal cruelty is rampant in the US and UK etc - that's why I mentioned factory farms etc.

But I'd be very surprised if anyone here was taken to court for shooting a cat, even if it had a name!
Of course, the treatment of detainees in Gitmo is a much more serious point and I acknowledge what you're saying.
I just happen to have spent my life attempting not to kill things (being vegan/ vegetarian; saving every insect I find etc etc), so animal cruelty in the street and the sight of dead cats sometimes upsets me. It was just a personal observation, and not a comment on the relative merits of US/UK v Egypt.

I know, I'm not trying to give you a hard time. I think you've dedicated your life to a very noble cause and you have utmost respect for that. I too was just making a general comment on an observation, that sometimes some Westerns treat animals with more respect than they treat Middle Eastern humans.
